Fit versus Fat

My regular readers may have noticed that I haven’t posted a Diet & Fitness Update in a while. That’s mainly because I didn’t feel like admitting to the entire internets that I’ve been slacking.

According to Saturday’s weigh-in, I’ve gained back everything I lost in the past… *checks chart* …three months. Of course, I’m not going to take one day’s weight as gospel, although the Omron Body Fat Analyzer seemed to think I’d gained some fat, too. Granted, Aaron was on vacation a couple weeks ago, so we ate dinner out a lot, but that’s no excuse for me to stop exercising and start eating like I was never on a low-carb diet in my life.

So. Where to restart?

I’ve mentioned this before: if I want to BE a fit person, I need to first ACT like a fit person. Thing is… I’ve never actually lived with a fit person before. I don’t relate. It doesn’t compute. I don’t even know how to be a fit-person poseur.

I think fit people wake up early — like, 6am early. Yikes.
So, what time do fit people go to bed? Before 10:00?
Fit people are active during the day, and I can do that. I walk during my lunch break.
Do fit people eat seconds at dinner? Dessert? If so, what kind of dessert? How often?
Do fit people watch any TV in the evenings? I mean, beyond the news?
Do fit people play on their computers? For how long?
If they don’t do the computer thing, what do fit people do in the evenings after work?
Fit people work out after work, for one thing. How long is normal? Every weekday? EVERY day?
What kinds of activities do fit couples do on the weekends? Walking at the metropark? Or more?
Fit people drink boatloads of water. I need to drink more, but I do drink more than some people.
Fit people have energy, and seem to be generally happy. I can fake that. Eventually, I won’t have to.

What else do fit people do, as opposed to fat people? And, by “fit people,” I don’t mean the people you see on bodybuilding.com, who look waaaay more buff than I can ever imagine myself. I mean people who are of normal weight. Maybe slightly over, but not much. And I don’t mean super-skinny people, either (there are a couple of those in my office at work, and I’m convinced that’s just hereditary).

So, speak up, normals. What makes you different from me?

  1. “Fit” are not normal. I am supposedly “Fit” I weigh 135 LBS (15 pounds less then College). I eat like there’s no tomorrow, I walk for 45 minutes, and tone w/ Yoga and Pilates for 25 minutes. I spend several hours on Video games, computers (Dragon Quest VIII is addicting), and TV- I need the Discovery channel, and my cartoons. I eat out a couple days a week, and I love to eat Popeyes Chicken, McyD’s, Skyline, and my most favorite, Chipotle. I just stopped worrying about weight and fitness, and decided to enjoy life. My enjoyment caused me to get “Fit.” My brother is stressing about losing weight, and he can’t. I just told him to “F*$( it!!!!” He refuses. Since I just gave up, and thought I am meant to be heavier, I started losing. I am now training for a 5k in September. Di, you have ALWAYS been healthy. You looked great in your recent photo. What I am saying is be happy. Depression MAKES you eat. Do the things you love. “Life is a banquet and some poor sucker is starving to death.” Don’t be that poor sucker!!!

  2. well, i take that back, then. i HAVE lived with a fit person before. 🙂

i really want to get down below 190 before aaron and i try to conceive. i just know that, if i don’t do it now, it might never happen. y’know?

i know i could feel better if i were lighter and firmer. i don’t want to feel all frumpy anymore.

  3. honestly, asking your friends what they do is going to be far less productive than asking a professional what *you* should do 😛

Someone who is already fit is going to have a different schedule than someone who wants to become fit. you’re not going to carb cycle and lift + cardio 3 days a week and long cardio 2 days a week – it would be unhealthy for you to start out that way.

If you’re resolved to do it, you’re gonna need something to write you a structured program and diet. John and I are not qualified to write you an indefinate lifestyle, if any of the ones we’ve suggested so far arent working or arent liveable to you 🙂

    ill answer your questions tho:

think fit people wake up early ? like, 6am early. Yikes. i’m usually up between 6:10-6:30. I wake up, check email/weather, shower, dress, cook breakfast, pack lunches, brush teeth, occasionally do makeup and sometimes help john take the dogs out, if he hasnt done it yet.

So, what time do fit people go to bed? Before 10:00? we usually do, sometimes as late as 11 but we’re usually pretty dead by then. 9:30 on earlier nights when we came home pooped 😀

Fit people are active during the day, and I can do that. I walk during my lunch break. – i dont do crap during the day, i am up and down out of my chair a lot, but not enough to burn significant calories. it’s because of my sedentary job that i have to go to the gym so much.

Do fit people eat seconds at dinner? Dessert? If so, what kind of dessert? How often? no, not usually with seconds. Portion control is a HUGE part of proper diet. as far as dessert goes, it should be a treat, maybe weekly or bi-weekly. if you cannot live without something sweet after dinner EVERY night then invest in a big box of sugar-free popsicles or fresh strawberries with splenda/stevia/sweetner of your choice. 😛

Do fit people watch any TV in the evenings? I mean, beyond the news? – we mostly watch DVDs, and it’s usually to relax at the end of the night, or soemthing to watch while eating. i’m not much for TV, but i never have been. except for Lost. omg lost.

Do fit people play on their computers? For how long? – we do, maybe an hour a night if we have time..

If they don’t do the computer thing, what do fit people do in the evenings after work? – well we go to the gym, then i cook/clean up – i find that spending a good half hour every night tidying and wiping up the house keeps me active AND cleans the place, so there you have it.

Fit people work out after work, for one thing. How long is normal? Every weekday? EVERY day? – not every day for us. we try to stick to the schedule of: 3 days lifting, 2 days cardio, 2 days rest. and not in that order, really. it usually takes us about an hour to lift (not constantly lifting) and then we do 20mins cardio, and then on all cardio days we try to do 45mins.

What kinds of activities do fit couples do on the weekends? Walking at the metropark? Or more? – it depends on the weekends. we spend so much time in the gym that we tend to have lazy weekends, but when we’re not gymming it 5 days a week, we definately take our dogs out for walks, go hiking/adventuring, shopping, anything that keeps us moving. a few summers ago I signed up for beginner’s tennis lessons and i’d practice on non-class days, it was only $70 for like 6 weeks of classes. so you could always take a class!

Fit people drink boatloads of water. I need to drink more, but I do drink more than some people. – i constantly get yelled at for this, i bet you drink more than me. i think you’re okay here.

Fit people have energy, and seem to be generally happy. – well that doesnt mean you should fake it 😀 although a positive attitude does help. Owen McKibben, a fitness cover model, has this great mantra of “it cant beat me.” example: he’s running, and there’s a huge hill and he tells himself, “it’s just a hill, and it cant beat me.” ..you have no idea how many times that has helped me. last mile of the 5k? “it’s just a mile, and it can’t beat me.” Last 15 mintues of cardio? “it’s 15 minutes, and it can’t beat me.”

So there you go, X# Habits of Mostly Fit Person.

  4. So. Where to restart?

I think the first place is to start thinking of exercise as your priority. As soon as you start doing this more, I think you?ll find that you have a lot more energy. Even if this means walking more than once a day. I?ve actually started walking to work (instead of driving) in the morning and have found an entirely new difference in my overall mood and productivity during the day ? I strongly suggest that you try it! Also – I was bummed to hear that you haven?t seen that much progress with your latest weigh-in  last time I checked you mentioned that you were changing your PUSH dvd to focus more on your legs bc you were happy with the results on your arms and abs? What happened to the motivation for the workouts? Let’s get you back on track! I just started and am already feeling better about a lot of things ? I hope you do soon too!
