Spring Challenge, Week #1

The short version: Both James and I lost one pound each this week, after a weekend of poor food choices and general culinary debauchery. That makes him down 0.4%, and me down 0.5%, just by virtue of our different starting weights.

The long version I’ll put after the jump, as it’s come to my attention that not everyone wants to hear the same diet and fitness crap week in and week out. Which is pretty much what it’s come to, isn’t it?

Anyway, I went online and bought myself some Balance bars, Zone Perfect dark chocolate bars, Ostrims (ostrich/beef sticks) and cinnamon pork rinds (they’re a throwback to the hardcore Atkins days — quite yummy, and very low in carbs). The unfortunate news is that Balance bars contain high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), and even the Zone Perfect bars have 14g of sugar apiece. But they’re so yummy…!

I also calibrated my fancy new pedometer this week, and discovered that my lunchtime walk ranges between 1.25 and 1.5 miles over a time span of 30 to 40 minutes. I walk just about 2 miles total in a day — hopefully, it’ll be easier (or at least more enjoyable) to double that number once it gets warmer outside.

This weekend is a gasshuku (weekend-long intensive Aikido seminar) at the dojo with Jay-Sensei’s teacher, Bill Gleason Sensei. I’ll be attending three of the four scheduled two-hour blocks between Friday and Sunday. I fully expect to have my ass handed to me in a big way. Maybe that will help balance out any evilness I happen to imbibe over the weekend.

My focus this week is cutting down on my sugar intake, especially refined sugars. It sounds ridiculous coming from a former low-carber, but I’m aiming to keep my sugar intake under 40g per day. Compared to the number of net carbohydrates I used to eat total, 40g of sugar is redonkulously high. Still, after looking at my DietOrganizer food tracker, I see that a few things I eat on a regular basis have almost 20g each, including:

  • Medium banana – 14g
  • Breyer’s Double Churn Light ice cream bar – 16g
  • Balance nutrition energy bar – 17g
  • Zone Perfect bar – 14g

And that’s not counting stuff I don’t eat on a regular basis, like agave nectar, grapes, and apples. Yes, I know all sugars are not created equal, and fruits are good for me. I’m just… well, I guess I’m just kind of all-or-nothing about it right now. Right now, I need to cut back on the sugars. Period.

I’d really like to lose two pounds this week. That would be really keen. At this point, though, I think I’d be content to lose even half a pound. Just keep the scale moving in the right direction.

Don’t mind me; I’m in a funky mood tonight. It’ll pass. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some HGTV to watch.
