garden bloggers bloom day is the 15th of each month
This Spring in Zone 6a/6b started out on the fast-track to Summer, but then managed to slow down to a crawl. Some blooms were ahead of schedule last month, but now other blooms are a little behind this month. I’m fine with that — the more of Spring there is, the better, in my book.
Starting in the front of the house, here’s what’s currently blooming in my corner of NW Ohio:
Despite an early-spring false start and some hungry deer, things are looking like Spring in my Zone 6a/6b garden.
What I had been told might be a viburnum bloomed magnificently in its new location, at which time I realized that it’s actually some sort of Prunus — cherry, perhaps? It looked nicer before the snow, but it’s actually still quite nice.
Things are starting up much earlier than in the past few years here in Zone 6a/6b. Not only are the spring bulbs springing, but the crocuses are in full bloom — both the Spring Beauty crocuses I planted in the fall and the mystery yellow ones that are currently in a weird spot behind a bush next to the house and really should be relocated.
I can always count on a beautiful Valentine’s Day bouquet from my husband to really fill out Bloom Day in February — just in case.
As it happens, though, I do have some other blooms indoors this February.
Two kalanchoes, both alike in dignity… One remained in the sunroom over the summer, and one lived outdoors in a pot.
The outdoor kalanchoe is currently in a larger pot than the one in which it spent its summer, and is spending the winter in our front foyer, sporting a multitude of teeny greenish white flower buds ready to open.
The sunroom kalanchoe, while tall and spindly, has been in full bloom for weeks now.
This kalanchoe is the only bloom I have to share for Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day this month, but hopefully I’ll have some forced forsythia and crocus blooms for February!
